Bespoke Bedroom Furniture For A 16th Century Cottage

May 2019

A much anticipated project that all of team Burlanes have been well invested in, we are so excited to share the photos of this beautiful period property with you!! Situated amongst acres of farmland in the heart of the Hertfordshire countryside, this beautiful 16th Century family home is everything a traditional British country home should be and more! We were delighted to be commissioned to design, handmake and install bespoke furniture for the homeowner's master bedroom, dressing room, en-suite and family bathroom

With a pitched thatched roof and original wooden beams, the house has so much charm and character, so it was important that we created furniture that was not only beautiful, but practical and easily accessible too. Storage space is very limited in the upstairs of the home, so we handmade made-to-measure drawers for either side of the bed.

With such low windows, it made sense to really make the most of the beautiful views of the countryside from the master bedroom, so we created a bespoke banquette seat with lift-up lid to sit beneath the window. Not only is this a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by, it also provides additional well needed storage space for blankets and bed sheets.

We would absolutely love to go back in time and see the families this beautiful home has housed over the years, and the different uses for all the rooms, how wonderful would that be?! This little staircase in the master bedroom leads down to a little corridor behind the kitchen, and is used daily by the current homeowners. Our design team created a bespoke partition wall and storage unit to sit perfectly at the foot of the bed, providing additional storage space without taking up too much room.

How incredible is this little doorway leading from the master bedroom to the dressing room?! With such an open plan space leading from one room to the next, it was important to ensure that the chosen colours of all cabinetry complemented each other well. To ensure the space flowed, the homeowners opted for the same colour throughout; 'Empire Grey' by Mylands.

With the pitched roof, wonky walls and rustic wooden beams, it was impossible for the homeowners to buy off-the-shelf furniture for any room in their home. We were able to design, handmake and install made-to-measure drawers and wardrobe space, providing lots of storage as well as maximising all available space in this room.

Motion sensor lights were also installed into the base of the cabinetry, which are activated by movement upon entering the room at either side.

In period properties such as this, it is vital to ensure that all floor space is well considered before the design process begins, and that your designer is able to interpret exactly what you, as the homeowner, are hoping to achieve. We would always recommend doing lots of research into the company you choose to go with; visit their showrooms, have a look at their website and social media, and ensure that they have experience in designing for and working within listed buildings. Not only do we design and handmake all of our furniture right here in the UK, we also have a team of 10 fantastic installers too, who work solely for us, with years of experience of fitting our furniture into our customers' lovely homes.

Despite having limited space to work with, our design team were able to create a compact but spacious en-suite with corner shower, handmade vanity unit with vessel basin and a boxed in toilet. There was even room for bespoke towel storage next to the basin!!
