A Kent oast house renovation: boot room
Tucked away in the Kent countryside, this beautiful oast house has recently undergone an entire refurbishment, turning the property into a wonderful family home flooded with natural light and lots of character.
With a busy working lifestyle and two small children to consider, Burlanes worked closely with the home owners to transform a number of rooms in their home, to not only suit the needs of family life, but to give the wonderful building a new lease of life, whilst in keeping with the stunning historical features and characteristics of the incredible oast house.

A boot room is a fantastic use of space for kicking off those muddy shoes and boots from the garden, and storing shoes and bulky clothing, hats, gloves and umbrellas in the winter months. A well designed and organised boot room is a fantastic was of keeping your home streamlined and clutter free! With such an open space at the back door of the oast house, our design team were able to create a lovely boot room area, with well laid out storage solutions.
Butt and Bead panelling is simply beautiful, and adds such a classic, country vibe to any property. The oast house just oozes charisma and rustic charm, and we wanted to ensure this was complemented as much as possible in all the room designs. Panelling not only looks beautiful, but protects the walls from bangs and scuffs, and can be easily wiped clean. Coat hooks and welly pegs are a great way of keeping bulky items up out of the way, within easy reach, and tidy, and make the space feel like a purposeful, important room, rather than just a place to hang coats.
Tucked in the corner of the room next to the cellar door is the most useful storage cupboard. We added coat hooks, pegs and shelving units for the family to really make the most of this space in terms of storage. In boot rooms, it is always a good idea to choose stones and floor tiles in strong earthy colours such as reds, greens and browns, which not only adds to the rustic vibe of the room, but also doesn't show the dirt after those muddy walks!
Boot rooms provide an easy and comfortable transition from indoors to outdoors, and vice versa, so it is always good to have built-in bench seating, providing a handy spot to remove shoes, help children with their laces, and provide extra storage space underneath.
Just off the boot room in this family home, is the ever-so-useful utility / laundry room, perfect for keeping the noise and nuisance of the washing machine and tumble dryer behind closed doors, and for storing the (seemingly endless) piles of laundry.
As well as the boot room, Burlanes also renovated the family kitchen, living room, bathrooms and the utility room / laundry.
