A Classic Country Kitchen, With All The Benefits Of Modern Living

Burlanes Bespoke Country Kitchen In East Sussex

We see so many beautiful homes in so many amazing locations, but every now and then we step into a home that really does take our breath away!

Located on the most wonderfully serene country lane in the heart of East Sussex, Mr & Mrs Carter's home really is one of a kind. A period property originally built in the 14th century, it holds so much incredible history, and has housed many families over the hundreds of years. Burlanes were commissioned to design, create and install the kitchen and utility room, and a number of other rooms in the home, including the family bathroom, the master en-suite and dressing room, and bespoke shoe storage for the entrance hall.

“I couldn’t recommend Burlanes more highly. Many visitors have commented that our new kitchen is the most beautiful kitchen they’ve ever seen – including professionals who see a lot of kitchens. Lindsey is hugely talented and such a pleasure to work with. There isn't anything she doesn't know about kitchens! She also designed three new bathrooms and a utility room, and beautiful bespoke cupboards for an entrance hall; all fabulous, in sometimes tricky spaces where we were blending contemporary fittings with Tudor/Georgian architecture. Costings were always clear, no nasty surprises, and everything done with great care, efficiency and helpfulness by a great team. A five star company.” - Mrs Carter, East Sussex.

With each century passing, additional structures, rooms and even floors to the property have been added, giving the home so much authentic charm and character. If only we had a time machine!! How wonderful would it be to travel back in time and see the property throughout the years?!

The Cabinetry

Our signature kitchen design, the Wellsdown kitchen is our take on the classic Georgian kitchen; built on the notions of good proportions and symmetry. Handmade and handpainted in our furniture workshop in historic Rochester, Kent, the main kitchen cabinetry is in 'Olive Colour' number 72 and the central island is 'Tracery II' number 78, both by the Little Greene Paint Company.

The Worktops

Choosing worktops for your kitchen is no easy task, and we always advise our clients to carefully research into whether man-made or natural stone will work best for them, and to weigh up the pros and cons of each before deciding. Mr & Mrs Carter wanted a natural stone worktop that was stain resistant, non-porous and durable; 'Brittanica' Quartz by Cambria was the perfect choice.

The non-porous, smooth texture of Quartz means it does not allow bacteria to grow, and is therefore very easy to clean and maintain, and does not need to be treated or sealed either.

Storage Solutions

With windows running along all three walls of the kitchen, there was not the space for wall cupboards. The views of the countryside are spectacular however, and natural light floods into the room from all angles. Having a separate utility room meant precious storage space was not taken up by appliances however, so a combination of Burlanes handmade cupboards and drawers provide ample storage for the couple.

Deep pan drawers are always super useful, particularly either side of the cooker, for oversized pots and pans that are difficult to stack and manoeuvre. In keeping with the symmetry of the rest of the kitchen, our design team at Burlanes Sevenoaks created bespoke drawer fronts to replicate the doors elsewhere in the kitchen design.

Concealed drawers for smaller plates, bowls and pan lids are also a fantastic was of maximising and making use of all available space.

Appliances

Mr & Mrs Carter have always had and loved the iconic AGA range cooker, so choosing their cooker for their new kitchen was a simple decision to make. Opting for the 5-oven AGA Total Control in Black, featuring roasting, baking, simmering, slow cooking and warming ovens, all controlled by a touch-screen control panel which puts you in charge of how and when the cooker is used.

A staple in a all country kitchens and paired with the classic Perrin & Rowe mixer tap, the Franke double Belfast sink is positioned beneath the window; with beautiful views of the acres of farmland and fields surrounding the home.

A second prep sink integrated into the island is perfect for preparing and washing vegetables, and even doubles up as a super useful and convenient ice bucket when entertaining too! The Quooker Flex boiling water tap means instant boiling water is readily available, and eliminates the need for a kettle too. There are so many wonderful benefits of having a Quooker tap in your kitchen, and we always encourage our clients to consider having one!!

The Glass Cupboard

Originally an unused doorway leading from the adjacent reception room to the kitchen, our installations team made use of this space by building a stud wall, and creating a beautiful glass fronted cupboard for the homeowner's unique pieces of crockery and glassware. Each shelf is made from toughened glass encased within a handmade oak frame, and are fully height adjustable too.

Spotlights make this cupboard a lovely feature of the kitchen, finished beautifully with our signature skirting, and unique Twig handles.

The Walk-in Pantry

Bespoke kitchen design means all available space can be well considered and maximised, so our design team transformed this once unused storage cupboard into a beautiful and super useful walk-in pantry. Complete with cabinetry and handmade shelving, and a lovely slab of cool Quartz worksurface too.

The Utility Room

Once a lovely little scullery that would have solely been used for washing dishes, we transformed the room adjacent to the kitchen into a super useful utility room, with lots of storage.

In keeping with the kitchen, the cabinetry is our Wellsdown style, handpainted in 'Mortar' number 239 by The Little Greene Paint Company, with a beautiful classic single Belfast sink and Perrin & Rowe mixer tap. For a streamlined and consistent finish, we would always recommend keeping the cabinetry style the same as your kitchen, and choosing a contrasting colour that is complementary too.

To make the most of and maximise all available space, our design team created a bespoke corner storage solution, and a made-to-measure tall cupboard, with custom made shelving and space for appliances.
