The Contemporary Hoyden Galley Kitchen In Essex

The homeowners of this beautiful family home in the Essex countryside visited Burlanes Chelmsford early last year, and worked with our Chelmsford design team to create their dream family kitchen extension. They had recently purchased the property, and had an entire home refurbishment planned. 18 months later, the refurbishment works are complete, and the property is stunning.

The Brief
With a busy work schedule and two small children, the homeowners wanted to create an open-plan kitchen diner that would work well for family meal times, socialising and entertaining guests. The rear extension to the home created much more space, and with the addition of the multiple sky-lights installed, it allowed us to design a galley style kitchen that was flooded with natural light. 

The Layout
A typical galley kitchen; long and narrow, it was important to ensure the layout was well planned, and tailored to the needs of the homeowners' cooking routine, as there was not the room for a central island. With so much space for base cabinets, there was not the need for wall cupboards, keeping the style of the space streamlined and minimalistic.

A good working triangle was created at the centre of the kitchen, with the integrated ovens, the induction cooktop and the sink within easy reach of each other. A good working triangle is essential when designing a kitchen; running from one end of the kitchen to the other when moving between the essential appliances is not ideal!!

Storage Solutions
Creating lots of useful storage was essential when designing this kitchen, and the Chelmsford design team used a combination of cupboards and drawers to ensure there was a place for everything. Deep drawers beneath the induction cooktop are perfect for storing large pots and pans, and a tall double door larder provides ample space for dry goods and vegetables.

Electric sockets installed within the larder also allow the homeowners to keep appliances such as the microwave within easy reach and use, but out of site too!

Opting for a free-standing non-integrated refrigerator gives the kitchen a contemporary feel, and the additional wine cooler is perfect for when entertaining guests.

Colour & Finishes
At Burlanes, there are absolutely no colour restrictions; we have an unlimited spectrum of paint colours for you to choose from, and that is how it will always be. The owners of the Hoyden kitchen in Essex wanted a dark, dramatic hue that would contrast well against the beautiful white worktops; Borough Market by Mylands was the perfect choice.

Burlanes' signature Country Cup and Round Knob handles in Burnished Brass were the perfect addition too, complementing the Perrin & Rowe mixer tap.

The Bootroom

Rather than sectioning off the space with stud walls, the homeowners chose to keep the entrance to their home and their kitchen open-plan. Opting for a slightly different paint hue for the bootroom area creates a room divide, and we designed, handmade and installed bespoke glass divider panels too.
