Make working from home right for you

According to Nicholas Bloom, Stanford University's economics professor, hybrid working is here to stay. Here at Burlanes, we are seeing a definite emphasis on hybrid working. Our clients are looking at how to remodel existing spaces or create new spaces to accommodate this shift towards flexible working. Discover our top tips on creating a home office or study which is both beautiful and practical.

Location, location, location

Both husband and wife were working from home full time, so commissioned Burlanes to help utilise the limited space in their home office. This home office needed to serve many purposes a place to store files, a room for the children to do their homework, and finally a family space for gaming. Click here for more information

Space for movement

Our brief was to design, create and install bespoke, handmade bedroom storage solutions and home office furniture, in two children's bedrooms in a Sevenoaks family home. As parents, the homeowners wanted to create a calm and serene space in which their daughters could do their studies, and provide a quiet place to concentrate away from the distractions and disruptions of family life. This is a brilliant option that can grow with your child and provide a dedicated space for studying in those all important senior years.

Designing your desk

With a Burlanes fitted home office it will be an aesthetically pleasing space to work, stable, uncluttered, and calming. Do you prefer open shelving or do you need your paperwork hidden away from sight? Our recent poll on Instagram showed that 68% of our followers preferred open shelving in their home offices.

Choice of chairs

Desk work involves spending a great deal of time sitting in an office chair - a position that adds stress to the structures in the spine. Therefore, to avoid developing or compounding back problems, it is important to have an office chair that's ergonomic and that supports the lower back and promotes good posture.

Storage and shelving

Create order in your working life with storage that works for you. Create spaces for printers and shelves deep enough to store files and books. Think about your workflow how you process information and what you need to hand. Like a kitchen, you need to create a perfect triangle between storage, your computer, and your printer.

Natural light

Good lighting is critical for any home office space, the more natural light you can get the better. This not only reduces eyestrain but will also promote good mental health. Make sure you position your screens so there is no glare. You can enhance your natural light with a light colour to create a sense of space. Add desk lamps to give good task lighting for the darker months of the year.

Think Tech

Wires, cables, connectors, and more create a cluttered look. Using bespoke design you can customise your home office with internal sockets, channels for wiring, grommets, and practical design solutions for all your technology. Consider where you want printers, routers, and other essentials so they can be stored neatly. Do not forget to create storage for keyboards and mice to give you a clear desk at the end of the day.

The finish is as essential as the craftsmanship of the wood. That’s why we only use the best paints from Mylands. With their luxury colour palette, you can choose tones that match your existing decor cabinets or make a statement. You spend a lot of time working so creating an environment that inspires you is key.
