Utilising Storage Space In A Cosy Home Office

December 2018

Surrounded by box files and piles of paper, our clients commissioned Burlanes to help utilise the limited space in their cosy home office. An accountant and keen arts-and-crafts hobbyist, homeowner Mrs Tate spends the majority of her time in her home office, so needed a space that was not only beautiful, but practical and with lots of storage space too.

“I am so thankful for the team at Burlanes for creating a room that we just love being in! My husband and I now both work from home, so we needed a room away from our family living space that ticked all the boxes of a comfortable home office with lots of storage space, which has definitely been achieved! Not only do we spend our weekdays in the new office, the children also use the room in the evenings for their homework and arts-and-crafts too, which is great. To really make the most of the available space, we have put a sofa bed in the room too, which my husband and children sit on to play computer games at the weekend.  We cannot recommend the Burlanes team enough; they just knew what we needed and got it so right” - Amelia Tate, Essex.

Our talented design team worked closely with Mr & Mrs Tate to create a space that had plenty of under counter and over head storage, so the worktops could be kept streamlined and clutter free. The under counter corner storage utilises the space that the L-shaped desk creates so every space went to good use and gives plenty of leg room.

A combination of cupboards and drawers allows for lots of varied storage space for stationary, box files and folders, as well as larger appliances such as Mrs Tate's sewing machine, computer games and the children's laptop. The beaded detailing, skirting and cornice ensures the furniture is not simply practical, but beautiful too.

To really maximise the available space, and to make the home office a suitable room for use by all the family, we created an arts-and-crafts bench with a dual plug socket, complete with USB ports too. This provided a spacious area for the children to do their homework, for appliances such as tablets and mobile phones to charge, and for Mrs Tate to use her sewing machine. The cabinet space beneath the worktop provides storage for larger appliances, such as the children's laptop and computer games.

We installed spotlights into the over head storage to give Mrs Tate that extra light needed for intricate sewing, when working on the beautiful quilt she is currently creating for her newborn niece.

With such a large south-east facing window, the room is flooded with natural light. To really make the most of this and to ensure the home office is as light and bright as possible, the walls are painted in 'Elgin' by Mylands; a versatile neutral that reflects and bounces light. The cabinetry is handpainted in 'Drury Lane', a warm grey that is classic, timeless, and compliments the natural grain of the wooden worktop perfectly.
