Something a little different to our usual style, we injected a little glamour into our handmade Decolane kitchen in Upminster, Essex. We shared this kitchen on our Instagram a couple of weeks ago and we were asked lots of questions about it; so we thought we would share a blog post of all details of this beautiful room.
"I went to several different kitchen companies to find someone that could not only interpret my vision but deliver a high quality bespoke finish that was unique to me, the Burlanes team gave me this and more. Jarrett, on the design side of things was knowledgeable in his field and extremely patient with me to create my dream kitchen. Andy would always be on hand to make sure things ran on time and smoothly as possible throughout the build and installation. I feel everyone went the extra mile to meet my demands. Thank you Burlanes!"
Sarah Kipping, Upminster
When the homeowners purchased this property, the kitchen was the first room they wanted to rip out and renovate, but uncertainty about which style to go for held them back, and it was actually the final room in the home to be completed! As the old saying goes, "The best things in life are worth waiting for..." Our Design Team at Burlanes Chelmsford worked closely with Mr & Mrs Kipping throughout the design process, to ensure that all of their ideas were discussed and considered, and that the most suitable kitchen layout and style was designed and created by us, for the family to love and use for years to come.
The Kitchen Cabinetry
The homeowners wanted a classic shaker kitchen with a contemporary twist, and all the benefits of modern living. Our Decolane kitchen was the perfect choice, handpainted in the most beautiful dark shade of blue, "Bond Street" by Mylands. Choosing the hardware was quite possibly the most simple task of this kitchen; the homeowners loved the industrial brass look against dark cabinetry, so a combination of our signature brass cup handles, round door knobs and beautiful tall cupboard pull handles were selected.
Quite possibly the most challenging decision of the kitchen design process, choosing the worktop style and colour was no easy feat!! The homeowners wanted something that complemented the classic yet industrial style and colour of the cabinetry, as natural looking as possible, but without the on-going maintenance that natural stone requires. Our Design Team suggested a Dekton worktop; an ultracompact surface that consists of a sophisticated blend of the raw materials used to create glass, porcelain and quartz worksurfaces. In short, it is a manmade product created using natural materials, subjected to intense pressure and heat to form an (almost!!) indestructible worksurface. You can cut directly onto the surface using the sharpest knife and you can even stand a boiling pan on the kitchen side, straight from the hob.
With a separate utility room adjacent to the kitchen, valuable storage space was not taken up by the washing machine and tumble dryer, and these did not have to be considered during the design process. For an ultra streamlined kitchen, the homeowners wanted all appliances to be integrated and hidden from sight, so two of the floor-to-ceiling larder units along the back wall house the refrigerator and freezer.
As keen cooks and regular entertainers, it seemed only natural to have a Mercury range cooker. The Mercury 1082 is induction, and is all electric. Not only is it very simple to use, it is also extremely energy efficient, and it looks so beautiful too!!The canopy above was designed and handmade to fit the Airuno Rigoletto slimline extractor perfectly.
The Copper Kitchen Sink
Quite possibly the most beautiful double sink we have ever seen, we are so excited to showcase our amazing Burlanes handmade copper sink. Mr & Mrs Kipping were really unsure as to which taps to pair with their incredible sink, but our Design Team suggested the Perrin & Rowe Mayan style, and how beautiful do they look!?
The Mayan taps are fixed and cannot be moved, so we installed two pairs, one for the main sink area, and another pair for the sink with the waste disposal system.
Copper is a natural material, and will age and tarnish over time, but we think it gets even more beautiful with age. When we were photographing this kitchen, Mrs Kipping confessed she often uses acidic substances like vinegar and red wine to age the sink as much as possible!!
The Coffee Station
Keen coffee drinkers, with a passion for the perfect blend, it seemed only natural to create a unique coffee station within our bespoke bi-fold pantry cupboard! Complete with fully functioning Quooker boiling water tap and drainage area, we were so envious of this cupboard of dreams!! The dishwasher is integrated in the cabinetry beneath, with the rubbish and recycling bins just to the right. We always advise our clients to have their kitchen sink, dishwasher and rubbish bins within easy reach of each other. It makes life so much easier when scraping, rinsing and loading the plates to be washed after meal times.
The Freestanding Larder / Home Bar
A beautiful piece of freestanding bespoke furniture, our signature Burlanes larder is always a good choice to make, if you have the space.
Even better when you have enough storage elsewhere to dedicate the entire larder to a home bar area!! Complete with fully adjustable shelving, bespoke wine rack, wine cooler and handmade spice racks (for the essential herbs for a Gin & Tonic may we add!!), and motion sensor lighting that is activated when the doors are opened.
The Finishing Touches
The incredible pendant lights over the central kitchen island are by Buster + Punch, and they are handmade in London.
Mrs Kipping visited their Shoreditch store, and carefully hand picked each pendant to create this look, along with a number of other amazing wall-hung lights for elsewhere in the room.
